For the love of Music! events
2 Feb 2012
This February there will be a range of events for young people to advance their skills, abilities and talents as part of Wyong Shire Council’s For the love of Music! program.
Due to the success of the program over the last two years, Council received an additional $30,000 from the NSW Government ‘Better Futures Program’ to coordinate music events and activities for young people aged 9 to 18.
Council invited community and not-for-profit groups to help them support young people in the design, development and operation of these music events.
Council’s Community and Cultural Development Manager, Julie Vaughan said the aim of the program is to engage young people living in Wyong Shire.
“This program gives young people the opportunity to develop their leadership and decision-making skills as well as giving them invaluable exposure to the music industry,” Ms Vaughan said.
“In partnership with Council, they gain access to a range of support networks and resources and are able to create long lasting community relationships.”
Events will include silent discos, hip hop workshops and competitions, busking opportunities and a workshop for aspiring recording artists.
“We hope we can recreate the success and accomplishments of young people demonstrated last year,” said Ms Vaughan.
“A great example is that of two dedicated youths that produced Youth Tunes 2011. As a result of the experience gained they have been able to set up their own business, Roadcase, which encourages other young people in the music industry.
“This year Youth Roadcase will be running a series of silent discos at four different locations across the shire, while also giving young people the opportunity to develop their performance and production skills.”
