Climate Change

Adapting to the potential impact of climate change will be a difficult issue that Council and the community will face in the near future.

The scientific community now agrees that there is human caused climate change.

The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates the atmospheric temperature at the Earth’s surface is increasing to around the top limit of its projections. IPCC data also shows from 1993-2007 the current global average annual sea level rise increased from 1.8mm per year to 3.4mm per year. It is expected to increase by another 0.91mm by 2100.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported in 2008 there was a steady pattern of warming across Australia. Australia’s annual mean temperature for 2008 was 0.41°C above the 1961-90 average. Despite the cooling effect of a La Niña event in late 2007, Australia has now recorded a warmer-than-average year for the past seven years since 2008.

Climate change is a major sustainability issue for our community. Sustainability is one of the essential and underlying principles of our Shire Strategic Vision “Our Shire Our Future”.   As part of Council’s commitment to sustainability, there’s a need to build resilience within the community so future generations can more easily cope with the impacts and aren’t burdened by today’s decisions. Our legacy should be to create a more Sustainable Shire for the future.
