Water education in primary schools

Central Coast Watertight Program is a joint water education program coordinated by Wyong and Gosford councils, and the Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre.

The program is tailored to the different stages of the primary school curriculum and is designed to raise awareness of water conservation and water management.

How 'Watertight' works

Watertight is like a one-day mini excursion in the school grounds.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in activities focusing on the water cycle; the water supply; water usage, wastewater; and the respective school’s management of water.

Many of the activities are hands-on and are linked to both the Key Learning Areas of the NSW curriculum and to aspects of Environment Policy of the NSW Department of Education and Training.

Activities include water quality testing, creating artwork, problem solving, report writing, communicating messages and studying models and maps.

Why take part?

Benefits include:

  • A greater understating of the local water supply its importance
  • Learning activities that are relevant to the daily lives of students
  • Developing a Water Management Plan for the school and involving students
  • Helping messages about the importance of water spread to the community.

Becoming involved

Many schools on the Central Coast have taken part in the Watertight Program and continue to do a great job at managing their school’s water. All schools on the Central Coast have the chance to take part in the Watertight program. Schools with the highest water use that meet the criteria will take first priority.

If your school would like to take part, contact Jennifer Lee, Water Education Officer on (02) 4350 5192 or jennifer.lee@wyong.nsw.gov.au.
