Economic development is important for Wyong Shire, to address high unemployment rates. In March 2010, Wyong Shire’s unemployment rate of 8.8% was much worse than the rates in Sydney (5.9%), NSW (5.9%) and Australia (5.6%). Of those employed around one third travel outside of the region for work.
To strengthen Wyong Shire’s economy and increase opportunities for local employment Council aims to:
- Provide support, advice and feedback to businesses looking to expand and develop in the Shire;
- Champion major employment generating developments from pre-lodgement to construction;
- Assist businesses establish and expand in the Shire by guiding them through the development control process from pre-lodgement discussions to final approval;
- Work with regional economic development agencies and business organisations to achieve mutual economic development and business growth objectives;
- Maximise opportunities to secure events for the Central Coast that will provide a boost to the economy and an opportunity for employment;
- Oversee Council’s partnership with economic development organisations by regularly reviewing and updating agreements with organisations such as The Entrance Town Centre Management, Greater Toukley Vision, Wyong-Tuggerah Chamber of Commerce, and the Business Enterprise Centre.
- Influence government economic policy;
- Advocate for the provision of infrastructure by all levels of government;
- Review Council regulations.
