Keeping of animals
Refer to Councils
K1 - Keeping of Animals.DOC (128.50 KB) Policy for information on housing animals on residential and rural properties.
Stray animals
Council Rangers will attend select stray livestock animals on public land. The rangers will attempt to restrain the animal and organise suitable transport to our stock pound for holding.
The types of stray animals that the Rangers will collect include:
- Cattle
- Horses
- Goats
- Sheep
- Pigs
- Alpacas
Rangers will not collect small domestic animals such as Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Ferrets, Chickens or Roosters.
If you have lost livestock, call our Customer Contact Centre on (02) 4350 5555 to check whether it is being held at our stock pound.
Rangers will not get involved with animals straying from private property to private property – this is a civil matter and/or a fencing issue. Rangers will not get involved with wild animals causing a nuisance – please contact National Parks and Wildlife or WIRES for advice.
Stray livestock animals may be restrained for collection by the Rangers, but the same process applies as with dog collections where the property owner will have to sign the animal over to the Ranger before collection.
Horses
As horses are a mode of transport, they can be ridden on roads or footpaths and owners do not have to clean up after them. Complaints can be made if they are being ridden on a reserve where signage prohibits it.
Although Council has no designated exercise areas in the Shire as there are for dogs, the public can exercise their horses by allowing them to swim in Wyong River near the boat ramp in the vicinity of
19 Wolseley Ave, Tacoma.
