Greywater reuse
Gosford City and Wyong Shire
Councils support the temporary use of greywater during
the current drought. Greywater
is household wastewater that’s usually
disposed of via the normal drainage system. It
can come from baths, spas, showers, hand basins,
washing
machine rinse cycles or laundry tubs.
It does
not include waste water from flush toilets, dishwashers
or kitchen sinks.
Water must be collected in a bucket, or similar,
and used as an alternative source of water for
garden irrigation.
Greywater
must be used immediately and not stored. The water
also should not be allowed
to pool
on the surface or run onto neighbouring properties.
Based
on current NSW Health guidelines and regulations,
there are three ways greywater
can be used for
domestic purposes:
- Temporary
application during a drought
- Permanent
diversion devices; and
- Permanent treatment
systems.
