What is liquid trade waste?

An incorrect, yet commonly held view is that only industrial premises produce liquid trade waste. In fact, liquid trade waste includes liquid waste from:

  • Industrial premises
  • businesses and commercial premises such as beauticians, florists, hairdressers, hotels, motels, restaurants, takeaway stores, butchers, service stations, supermarkets, dentists
  • community/public premises such as craft clubs; schools; colleges; education facilities; hospitals and nursing homes
    dairies, piggeries and cow sheds
  • Trade activity such as mobile carpet cleaners, graffiti removalists

  • Saleyards and racecourses, stables and kennels that are not associated with households
  • Any commercial activity carried out at a residential premises

  • Septic tank waste, waste from marine pump-out facilities and established sites for the discharge of pan content from mobile homes, caravans to the sewerage system.

Do I need to apply for Liquid Trade Waste approval?

Why control liquid trade waste?

Sewerage systems mainly collect waste from houses. However, these systems may also be capable of accepting liquid trade waste, provided that the discharges are planned, known and within accepted limits.

It is, therefore, important for Council to regulate liquid trade waste discharges, so that the waste does not:

  • Cause problems for the sewerage treatment processes
  • Compromise the health and safety of council workers
  • Damage council’s infrastructure and assets
  • Significantly increase maintenance costs
  • Overflow the system
  • Cause significant odour complaints
  • Harm the environment
  • Harm public health and safety
  • Degrade effluent and biosolid quality and management

Additional information can be obtained by telephoning Council on (02) 4350 5555 and asking for the Trade Waste Section or emailing ltw@wyong.nsw.gov.au
