Water
Corporation impacts
13 February 2008
The State Government proposal for a new Central Coast Water Corporation could
have a number of impacts on Wyong Shire ratepayers.
The Government proposal is to transfer water, sewerage
and drainage services across the Central Coast into
a new and separate body.
This means that instead of Wyong and Gosford Councils
managing these services as they currently do, ratepayers
will need to deal with a third bureaucracy.
The potential impacts could include:
- increased water rates to help pay for this third
bureaucracy
- no longer being able to pay water bills through
Council offices
- development approvals needed from two separate
organisations
Community water survey
Council
recently conducted a community survey to gauge residents’ opinions
about the State Government’s proposed Water Corporation.
The State Government has claimed this survey was “push
polling”. Council disagrees. Community consultation
is an important part of this process.
Here is one of the questions from that survey and
the choice of five answers. Council encourages everyone
to form their own opinion.
Q. How concerned are you that corporatisation will
force up the cost of water and sewerage services?
A. Very concerned / Concerned / Not very concerned / Not at all concerned /
Don’t know
Of those who responded to the survey 70.1% said they
were very concerned and 24.6% said they were concerned.
Council is keen to continue hearing community views.
