State Government water plans

Comments from Wyong Shire Mayor, Warren Welham.

23 January 2008

"As residents may know the State Government is pushing for a new Central Coast Water Corporation to include all the region’s water supply and delivery services as well as our sewerage and drainage services.

"Wyong Shire Council does not believe this new corporation will benefit the local community as it will create a third bureaucracy and could increase costs.

"It believes water delivery services and sewerage and drainage services should remain as they are.

"Council is also concerned that corporatising our water, sewerage and drainage services now (with community assets worth about $1 billion) could make it easier for the State Government to privatise these services in the longer term.

"Councillors met with the NSW Water Utilities Ministers last week and expressed their concerns with the State Government model.

"An independent survey of Shire residents recently revealed that more than 90% of respondents agreed our local water and sewerage services should not be corporatised.
Council is keen to continuing hearing local views.

"An information sheet is being delivered to all households this week. Please send us your views to PO Box 20, Wyong, NSW 2259, or by email."
