Central Coast NAIDOC Week Awards celebrate a decade

Nominations are being called for the 10th annual Central Coast NAIDOC Week Community Awards.

Following last year’s success, the Central Coast Aboriginal Congress will again be holding a NAIDOC Ball to recognise this year’s award winners.

Sponsored by Wyong Shire and Gosford City Councils, the awards acknowledge the work and talent of the area’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Mayor of Wyong Shire, Councillor Bob Graham, said Council was proud to support the NAIDOC Community Awards.

“Council established the NAIDOC Week Community Awards in 1999 to raise the profile of Indigenous people in the Shire. As a result of its initial success, Gosford City Council came on board during the year 2000 and the Community Awards became regional,” Mayor Graham said.

The Awards are seen as a symbol of Reconciliation between the Councils and the Indigenous communities of the Central Coast.

“It’s always good to hear about what is being done in the local community. So if you know of someone who deserves recognition for their work in the community, get your nomination in,” Mayor Graham added.

Categories for male, female and youth nominees include:

  • Community Services/Humanities

  • Achievement in Work

  • Achievement in Art and Culture

  • Achievement in Sport

  • Outstanding Service/Organisation

  • Non-Indigenous Service Award.

The NAIDOC Ball and winners will be announced on Friday 10 July at Mingara Recreation Club. Nominations for the awards close at 5pm on Friday 26 June and will be assessed by a panel.

To nominate someone in your community use this form or contact either Wyong Council’s Dawn Brown on (02) 4350 5386 or Gosford Council’s Keith Hall on (02) 4325 8904

This year’s national theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘Honouring Our Elders, Nurturing Our Youth’ and will be celebrated across Australia from 6-13 July. NAIDOC Week is a way of celebrating and promoting a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their culture.

Tickets for the Ball are now on sale and can be purchased by contacting Vickie Parry on 0448 476 027 or Raelene Dennis on 0403 470 908.
