Council to inspect Shire's restricted breed dogs

Owners of the pit bulls in Wyong Shire are about to receive a visit from Council Rangers.

Council is about to start the annual inspections of restricted breeds, checking to see whether owners of restricted breed dogs are complying with the regulations.

"We have a dedicated officer about to start the inspections," Chief Ranger Jody Hinds said.

"Owners of all restricted dog breeds are required to have a certificate of compliance from Council.

"And they must comply with all legislation pertaining to restricted breeds including keeping their pet in a safe enclosure no less than 10 square metres."

Dogs regarded as restricted breed in NSW include the American pit bull terrier, or pit bull; Japanese tosa; dogo Argentino and fila Brasileiro.

The only one of these breeds known to exist in the Shire is the 86 pit bulls registered with Council.

"Anyone who owns a restricted dog breed and fails to comply with the requirements set out in the legislation can have their dogs seized and destroyed," Mr Hinds said.

"And owners can be fined in excess of $2000 for failing to comply with the laws.

"The safety of the public is our main concern."

The inspections will be carried out over the next few months and owners will be sent a letter in advance reminding them of their requirements and the upcoming inspection.
