Council owns and operates the Buttonderry Waste Management Facility. Approximately 250,000 tonnes of waste are received each year with 110,000 tonnes recycled and 140,000 going to landfill. The facility is located on Hue Hue Road and open all year round. Recyclable waste can be dropped off for free, but there are fees and charges for other waste.

Council also operates Woy Woy Landfill (Nagari Road Woy Woy) and the Kincumber Waste Transfer Centre (Cullens Road Kincumber). Kincumber Transfer Station only operates as a recycling and processing facility for all dry inert and green waste. It does not accept general waste.

Household Garbage Bin (Red Lid)

Put your household garbage bin (red lid) out every week on your normal garbage collection day.  Residents can request a larger bin - 240L - for an extra fee. If you are not sure of your collection day or would like a larger bin contact Cleanaway on 1300 126 278.

Acceptable Items include food scraps, plastic bags, foam, disposable nappies, tetra pak containers, light globes and pyrex and other general waste that can't be recycled.

Acceptable Items: margarine and ice cream containers; paper and cardboard products; steel and aerosol cans; rigid plastic bottles & containers, including lids; glass bottles and jars; aluminium cans, clean foil and trays and milk and juice cartons with gable tops. Find out what else you can recycle here.

Please don’t place items for recycling in plastic bags or place other general garbage in the recycling bin.

Garden Vegetation Bin (Green Lid)

A green lid bin is provided to residences east of the M1 for your garden vegetation waste. It is collected fortnightly on the alternate week to your yellow bin.

Acceptable Items include: plants and small shrubs, grass clippings and leaves, flowers and weeds, prunings, twigs, branches and timber that is unpainted, untreated and doesn't have nails.

This vegetation will be composted, so it is important that only acceptable materials are placed inside.

Booking a Bulk Kerbside Collection

Each household is entitled to six kerbside collections per year, on request (reset each February).  These can be either bulk household items or bulk garden vegetation. If you place bulk household waste and bulk garden vegetation out at the same time it counts as two collections.

Before placing material out for collection you must visit the Cleanaway website and book a collection or phone Cleanaway on 1300 126 278 to book a kerbside collection. Bookings must be made at least two business days in advance otherwise the collection will occur in the following week. Kerbside collections occur the same day as normal bin collection.

For a prompt pick-up please ensure that:

  • Only acceptable material is placed on the footpath
  • All material is presented neatly
  • Bulk household waste and bulk vegetation are presented in separate piles
